Nicolas Potel

Nuits-Saint-Georges

2008 Nicolas Potel Saint-Romain
NOV 10 Pale straw yellow, some tropical and citrus fruits over minerals and some flint. Good acidity, well balanced, elegant, not too complex, but very refreshing and good length.
86

2006 Nicolas Potel Le Montrachet
JUN 13 Towards lemon yellow. Apples, light minerals, some vanilla notes, tight nose, even after several hours it doesn't open, is this it? Fresh acidity, lemons, vanilla, some minerals, leaner, lime, leaner, it is long, quite long even but it lacks the subtlety, layers, depth and details of a great Montrachet. 93

2006 Nicolas Potel Le Montrachet
MAY 10 Towards pale lemon yellow, apples, plaster, minerals, some floral overtones and perfumed. Great acidity, fantastic balance, lovely minerals, very complex, lot of things going on, not all of them easy to detect, fresh body, not the fattest of Montrachet's, great length.

2006 Nicolas Potel Clos de Vougeot
DEC 14 Bright ruby. Lightly scented, some floral notes and red berries, tight but opens up. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, fresh, lively, quite intense, detailed, long finish.
90

2005 Nicolas Potel Charmes Chambertin
JAN 10 Bright ruby, closed, strawberries, some darker fruits, floral, some violets and spices. Very fragrant, great acidity and balance, great length. Wait at least 5-6 years, will last much longer. 93

2005 Nicolas Potel Clos de Vougeot
JAN 10 Ruby with thin pink rim, very closed, some strawberries, cinnamon, and spices. Fresh acidity, complex, fruity, some oak, needs time, long length. Wait 7 or more years. 92

1992 Nicolas Potel Meursault 1er Cru Sous Blagny Sélection
FEB 11 A level fill, towards golden colour, oxidized apples, butter, nuts, smoke and bonfire. Acidity ok, but the wine really lacks freshness, feels more oxidized in the mouth than on the nose, flabby finish.

1989 Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche
JAN 13 Ruby brick rim. Earthy first, getting more fruity and strawberries with air. After an hour in decanter it opens up more and more. In Riedel Vinum Riesling it's a bit tight, but focused and fresh, verging on acidic. In Riedel Vinum Burgundy, again rounder and more scented, even floral. Acidity is more balanced and the wine feels more rounded and much more pleasant. Maybe even longer, something I didn't find on the Rousseau. Riedel Sommelier Burgundy and the aromas almost disappears, but even rounder on the palate. On both wines, I find that the nuances and some of the complexity is lost for a roundness in the bigger glass. 96

1989 Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche
JAN 12 Garnet, brick rim. Earth, dirt, leafy, some strawberries clinging on for their bare life, far in the back. Herbs. Good acidity level, tannins almost gone, grapefruit finish. Never opened up, even the day after.
Not optimal bottle? 85

1989 Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche
MAY 10 Ruby with garnet rim fantastic nose, chocolate, strawberries, red fruits, chanterelles and leaves. Such complexity and elegance, intense fruit, balanced, very long length.

1985 Nicolas Potel Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes
JAN 10 Pale golden yellow, smoke, flint, intense of minerals, butter and nuts. Elegant and complex, fresh acidity, very lively with the minerality, very long finish. Decanted for 30 minutes. 90

1982 Nicolas Potel Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes
JAN 10 Lemon yellow, more mature than the 85, a bit less intensity, especially on the mineral side, needs a lot of time to open, this bottle also decanted for 30 minutes, takes 40 minutes to start to open, more fragile and tender than the 85, but very much the same flavours and aromas, more elegant, very long finish. 89
